Hugh J. Lofting

Founder & President

After stints as a Montana cowboy and an agricultural student, Hugh returned to his Pennsylvania roots and combined his love of building with his passion for old barns and houses founding his namesake company in 1974. He traveled to Switzerland to learn CAD, to France to understand glue-lam construction, and throughout New England visiting historic and new timber-framed structures. Hugh oversees all aspects of the company from business development, cash flow management, and day-to-day operations including client communications and project estimation. He encourages the Hugh Lofting Timber Framing team to do their best work every day, with a sense of humor and respect for everyone’s contributions. In his free time Hugh enjoys spending time with his grandsons, raising chickens, and playing tennis.

Dale Kretzing

Director of Design & Project Management

With 40+ years of expertise in timber frame design and project management, Dale returned to Hugh Lofting Timber Framing in 2003 after working with Hugh in the 1980s. Dale brings a balance of creativity and common sense to his role drafting detailed plans and 3D models while balancing client communications and coordination with our fabrication team. He holds degrees in psychology, math, and physics from the University of Delaware. Dale has a true passion for timber framing and is continuously creating innovative solutions to timber frame construction. Dale spends his free time coaching and playing sports with his wife and five kids.

Elsworth “Kirk” Groff

Director of Production & Operations

Kirk manages the Hugh Lofting Timber Framing shop training and supervising our skilled craftsmen, coordinating job schedules, communicating with clients, and ensuring the precise fabrication of our hand-cut timber frames. Despite early plans for a career in underwater welding, Kirk has spent nearly 30 years in timber framing, joining the HLTF team in 2009. He likes the challenge of designing joinery and teaching the craft, while his keen observation skills catch even the smallest mistake. Kirk lives in Lancaster County where he enjoys hunting and the occasional round of golf.

Amanda Kent

Director of Finance & Administration

A Florida resident, Amanda joined Hugh Lofting Timber Framing in 2009. She holds a B.S. in Business Management from Guilford College and is responsible for all budgeting, cash flow, human resources, contract management, compliance and insurance for the company. In her free time Amanda enjoys spending time with her husband and school-aged daughter, often rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles or brewing an award-winning homebrew beer.

Elliott Lofting

Administrative Coordinator

Elliott has spent her life around Hugh Lofting Timber Framing, climbing on her father’s timber frames as a kid and watching the business evolve. She brought her marketing and social media savvy to HLTF full-time in 2006 and is responsible for everything from maintaining the social media accounts and the website, managing company records, and managing the HLTF office. Elliott attended Franklin and Marshall College and spends her time away from work with her two young sons and supporting Philadelphia sports teams.

Skilled Timber Framer & Safety Supervisor

Jamie serves as a key member of the team and as the Hugh Lofting Timber Framing safety supervisor. Whether he is laying out or carving timbers, teaching skills to new timber framers, conducting safety training, or raising a frame, Jamie brings his hard work ethic and good sense of humor to keep morale and spirits high. He joined HLTF in 2000, after hand-delivering the Help Wanted sign and returning daily until Hugh hired him. Outside of work, Jamie is an amateur photographer, an avid skier, and enjoys spending time with his wife and two Black Labradors while rooting for Manchester United and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Timber Framer

Daran joined the HLTF team in the spring of 2022, bringing 15+ years’ experience in the home building industry including in historic restoration services He is committed to continuously expanding his timber framing skills, with a particular focus on layout. Daran also oversees the management of our company vehicles. In his free time, Daran is a freelance electronic music artist and enjoys spending time with his partner Melissa and their dog, Buddy.

Timber Framer

A native Virginian, Drew joined the HLTF team in January of 2025, bringing over 4 years of timber framing experience with him, in addition to a Bachelor of Science degree from Bridgewater College. He is a dedicated team member, honing his joinery skills and learning CAD Works. In his free time, Drew enjoys spending time in the mountains with a bow and fly rod as well as boating on the Chesapeake.
